ACER to decide on changes to the methodology for EU day-ahead and intraday market algorithms

In brief

ACER is preparing to decide on proposed changes to the common methodology governing the algorithms used in the European Union’s day-ahead and intraday electricity markets. The proposal, submitted by all nominated electricity market operators on 21 July 2026, concerns the systems that simultaneously match electricity orders and allocate cross-border transmission capacity. Established under the EU Capacity Allocation and Congestion Management Regulation, the methodology sets shared technical requirements, timelines and implementation deadlines for market coupling across Europe.

The amendments are intended to improve the efficiency of cross-border electricity trading, increase overall market welfare and preserve secure power-system operation. They would support three intraday auctions using flow-based capacity calculation, revise the timing and publication of auction results, establish a firm deadline for implementing flow-based allocation in intraday auctions, and adjust the deadline for publishing single day-ahead coupling results. Stakeholders may submit comments until 31 August 2026, while ACER expects to issue its decision by 21 January 2027.
