Engie, Legrand sign France’s first 24/7 renewable energy supply deal

In brief

Engie and electrical equipment manufacturer Legrand have signed what the companies describe as France’s first renewable electricity supply agreement based on hourly matching. Running from 2029 to 2031, the contract will supply Legrand from a portfolio of renewable generation sites, with Engie aiming to match the company’s electricity consumption with renewable production during 70% of all hours. Performance will be monitored regularly, and the agreement will be certified under the international EnergyTag standard to provide greater transparency and traceability.

The model is more precise than conventional corporate renewable-energy contracts, which often compare total generation and consumption only on an annual basis. Engie says the hourly approach is designed to remain compatible with possible changes to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which is considering more detailed rules for corporate clean-energy claims. The company has introduced the agreement before those revisions are finalised and is promoting similar round-the-clock renewable supply arrangements to other commercial and industrial customers.
