Kazakhstan’s installed solar capacity reached approximately 1.38 GW by the second quarter of 2026, spread across 52 operational plants larger than 200 kW. Overall, the country had 169 utility-scale renewable facilities—including solar, wind, hydropower and biogas—with a combined capacity of nearly 3.75 GW. Renewables generated 8.6 billion kWh in 2025, equal to 7% of national electricity production and more than 1.7 times the level recorded in 2022. The government attributes this growth to renewable-energy auctions, investment incentives and the commissioning of new projects.
Kazakhstan plans to add 245 MW of renewable capacity through ten projects in 2026, including five solar plants totaling 92.6 MW, three of which had already entered operation by the end of the second quarter. The country has supported renewables through fixed tariffs since 2014 and competitive auctions since 2018, with auctions held between 2018 and 2025 procuring almost 6.94 GW of future capacity. A further 97 projects totaling just over 3 GW are planned, while the government has authorized 2026 tenders for 265 MW of solar, 450 MW of wind and 200 MW of hydropower. Small-scale renewable adoption is also rising under a net-metering scheme for systems of up to 200 kW.
