Rolls-Royce wins contract from Sunly for large scale battery storage in Latvia

In brief

Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Sunly have signed contracts to build four large-scale battery energy storage systems in Latvia with a combined capacity of 490 MWh. The announcement was made at the opening of Sunly’s new solar park in Valmiera, one of Latvia’s first hybrid energy parks. The mtu EnergyPack system at Valmiera is scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2027, while the other three sites are expected to follow later in 2027.

The projects will use Rolls-Royce’s mtu EnergyPack technology and mtu EnergetIQ software to decide when electricity should be stored or released, helping to stabilise the grid, integrate renewable generation and balance supply and demand. Sunly said pairing solar power with storage will make renewable energy more reliable and less weather-dependent, while Rolls-Royce described the systems as important for grid stability and energy security in the Baltic region. The two companies have also signed a memorandum of understanding for a 300 MWh project in Risti, Estonia.
