The Gas Market Task Force releases its assessment of EU gas and gas derivatives markets

In brief

The Gas Market Task Force has released its assessment of the EU gas and gas derivatives markets, following a mandate linked to the European Commission’s 2025 Clean Industrial Deal Communication and Action Plan for Affordable Energy. The task force brings together the European Commission, ACER and ESMA, combining energy and financial market oversight to examine whether Europe’s gas markets are functioning properly, transparently and competitively.

The assessment reviewed market fundamentals, recent developments, the existing legislative framework and stakeholder feedback from the Commission’s consultation on commodity derivatives and spot energy markets. Its recommendations point to further work on monitoring algorithmic trading, developing new market surveillance tools, ensuring timely implementation of REMIT rules, adjusting certain commodity derivatives trading rules, and improving data sharing and cooperation between energy and financial supervisory authorities.
